Aircraft carriers named

The Royal Navy has chosen Queen Elizabeth and the Prince of Wales for the names of its two new ‘super’ carriers, to be in service as flagships of the fleet by 2010. They will replace the aging ‘through-deck cruisers’ HMS Ark Royal, HMS Illustrious and HMS Invincible. Although the contract to build the two new carriers has yet to be finalised, it is understood that VT in Portsmouth are being considered by the Ministry of Defence for a part of the four billion pound contract to construct the 60,000 ton vessels. Portsmouth has been chosen to be the home of the two new carriers, with dredging and other improvements already being prepared for their arrival.
