Le Solitaire Afflelou

Portsmouth has landed its fourth premier yachting race in six months, confirming its place as an international destination for maritime events. The noble Le Solitaire Afflelou Le Figaro is one of the world’s longest single-handed races that was established 35 years ago. To celebrating their anniversary, and the anniversary of the D-Day landings, they have chosen Portsmouth harbour and Gunwharf Quays in particular, to host the British leg of the 2004 tournament over 2 days starting on July 28. The four-stage, 1,476-mile race features some 50 yachts racing from Portsmouth’s twin town of Caen, to Portsmouth for a stopover. The route celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Normandy landings, and its opening leg will travel in the opposite direction of the sailors and soldiers during the landings in 1944.
