Commemorative IOM Stamps
One of the most significant turning points in British naval history – the Battle of Trafalgar - is being marked by Isle of Man Post with a set of stamps commemorating its bicentenary.
Produced in association with the National Maritime Museum the issue comprises eight stamps in four se-tenent pairs depicting four distinct themes: the life of Nelson, his fall, the Battle of Trafalgar itself, and ‘race and chase’ – scenes from the Nile campaign and Battle of Copenhagen.
Supporting the bicentenary issue is a special two-stamp mini sheet - Manxmen at Trafalgar – in recognition of the contribution made by Manx sailors at the Battle of Trafalgar, most notably by Captain John Quilliam RN, born in 1771 at Ballakelly in Marown who features on one of the two stamps alongside Admiral Lord Nelson.
Philatelic bureau manager Dot Tilbury said: ‘We were fortunate to have the invaluable assistance of the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich in the preparation of this stamp issue. The museum will be hosting many events during 2005 to commemorate the events of 1805 and we’re pleased to be making our contribution to mark what is quite possibly the most famous sea battle ever fought.’
